WGN INVESTIGATES Illinois Attorney general orders Dolton to release spending records /(Chicago Suburb)

Last November, WGN Investigates first reported how a south suburban politician and her allies spent taxpayer money on first class airline tickets, luxury hotels and high-end restaurants.

The elected positions pay her more than $280,000 annually, according to interviews and records.

After the story aired, WGN Investigates sent a public records request to Dolton asking for, among other things, copies of additional credit card statements to check if the spending spree continued.

The village did not turn over the records, as required under state law. The records request, sent via email on Nov. 29, also asked for copies of documents showing any payments to Henyard.

WGN Investigates filed an appeal with the Illinois Attorney General.

The office recently concluded its investigation by issuing a rare binding opinion.

“In the opinion, the Village of Dolton is directed to respond as soon as possible to the request,” a spokeswoman for Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said in an email. “The village has 35 days after the issuance of the opinion to either comply or contest the opinion in court.”

The opinion was dated Feb. 9.

Last year, WGN Investigates also asked Thornton Township for additional credit card statements.

That agency turned over the records. The statements showed Henyard and other officials spent nearly $67,000 in township funds on trips to Portland, Austin, Atlanta and New York City in recent months.

In Atlanta, the group stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel and brought home a bill of $9,347. In New York, they stayed at the Mariott Marquis in Times Square where the hotel charged the group $13,098.

Airline records show everyone in the group frequently flies first class.

Keith Freeman, Dolton’s village administrator, had no immediate comment on the attorney general’s opinion.

She arranged laws so that the next mayor that ISN'T her the salary goes from $280k to $25k. The board approved the bills and she doesn't pay them. And now she is refusing to release FOIA documents.

This bottom dweller is setting the black cause back 100 years by being every stereotype of angry black woman there is. The black residents of Dolton deserve far better.

Mayor Henyard is acting like every other crooked Democrat politician in Illinois. She’s just too loud and too much out in the open about using public money for her own personal use that the Illinois AG has to investigate. This isn’t at all unusual. There are a number of small, mostly-black jurisdictions surrounding the Chicago metro area. Being black-run, they’re very poorly managed and in constant financial trouble. They turn to white-run neighboring jurisdictions for their police, water, roads, etc., while their Big Man (or, as in this case, Big Woman) mayor and his underlings live high on the hog.
