Moscow has put the Estonian prime minister, Kaja Kallas, and other Baltic states officials on a wanted list, as Tallinn warns of an imminent Russian military buildup along its border.
The Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the Estonian state secretary, Taimar Peterkop, the Lithuanian culture minister, Simonas Kairys, and Kallas were accused of “destroying monuments to Soviet soldiers”, a reference to the removal of Soviet-era second world war memorials
“This is only the start,” Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel. “Crimes against the memory of the world’s liberators from nazism and fascism must be prosecuted.” Russian authorities have not revealed the exact charges against the three.
...When asked by reporters about Kallas on Tuesday, Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said the Estonian leader “took hostile acts against our country and historical memory”.
...“We have decided … Soviet monuments must be removed from public spaces and we will do it as quickly as possible,” Kallas said in the summer of 2022

Oh and after they defeated the Nazis (with American help), the Russians conquered Eastern and Central Europe
They ain’t seen nothing. If you want to see desecration of war monuments, go to Virginia or DC.
Our concern in our border, not theirs.
Hardly war memorials - more like Soviet conquest memorials
So then why are you so interested in being pro-Putin?
Can we hire the Russians to go after the woke BLM pukes that destroyed ours?
You can say the same thing about a Robert E. Lee statue in DC. I’m not blaming the Estonians. Why the heck didn’t they do this 25 years ago? If it were me, I would have.
How’s the weather in Poland?
You can’t say “the same thing about a Robert E. Lee statue in DC”
The Robert E Lee statue was installed in 1909, decades after the war. That statue was to commemorate what he did for his home state AFTER the war.
Completely different from the Soviet war memorials - those were seen and ARE seen as a conquerors “I won” statements
good.
I understand the weather in Moscow is 17 Fahrenheit and rainy. How’s that affecting you?
This is a tough one. The Soviets (who indeed helped to start the war) lost 10s of millions during the war. The Germans fought them tooth and nail up until the last day of the war. Lots of Soviet soldiers died in what is now free eastern Europe. Of course they put up monuments to their dead in ‘The Great Patriotic War’.
And of course, the people of east Europe soon realized that the Soviets were invaders and occupiers of their nations. They had virtually no say in the.matter. When they got their independence with the fall of the Soviet Union, they viewed the monuments as eyesores and painful reminders of Soviet conquest.
The Soviet soldiers’ graves should remain sacred ground. The monuments in the middle of town should be removed but not destroyed even though the pain they may give is so much fresher than any statue honoring Confederate soldiers.
The Soviets lost 10s of millions yes, fighting their erstwhile ally.
The Soviets did not “free Central or Eastern Europe” — unlike the British and American forces. Instead the Soviets conquered central and eastern Europe.
It was replacing one totalitarian regime with another
But Vlad KGB Putin is not a commie, and doesn’t want to reconstitute the USSR.
Oh, no ...
You’d argue about whether the sun is coming up in the morning. I was not speaking of one particular desecrated Lee monument. You can find Confederate war memorials desecrated by the woke Nazis all over this country. Forget the desecrated Lee monument in DC. How about the ones surely desecrated in Philly or Baltimore or Louisville?
Confederate statues were
1. not erected by a conquering army
2. erected decades after the civil war.
Soviet war memorials were
1. erected by a conquering army
2. symbols of 45 years of occupation by the Russian Soviets
Completely different
Oh yes, he just thinks the ZSSR was great and he'd like it back in business.....
I understand he is a converted Catholic.
“...they viewed the monuments as eyesores and painful reminders of Soviet conquest...”
Note the difference - when the US troops fought Nazi Germany in WWII they liberated Europe and they returned home, not only leaving those countries to govern themselves but helped them re-build. Those people still love the American GI.
The countries liberated by the USSR remained under USSR dominance with both USSR government and military in place. Those eastern European countries hate the occupiers.
It was replacing one totalitarian regime with another
During the invasion of Norway, the brand-new cruiser KM Blücher leading an invasion fleet, was sunk by the Norwegians with a large loss of life. Her sinking delayed the Nazi invasion long enough to let the Norwegian government and royal family to escape to Britain. The Nazis erected a monument to the lost men on the shore overlooking where she sank. As soon as the war ended, the Norwegians tore the monument down.
