Oregon GOP state senators who staged walkout over abortion can't run for reelection, high court says

The Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that 10 Republican state senators are ineligible to run for reelection after they participated in a quorum-denying walkout for six weeks last year to stall legislation on abortion, transgender treatments and firearms.

The high court decided in favor of Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade, who had disqualified the senators from running for office again after voters approved a measure in 2022 to amend the state constitution to ban lawmakers with more than 10 unexcused absences from running again.

The measure to prevent walkouts passed after GOP lawmakers staged other walkouts from the Legislature in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Five of the 10 Republican state senators, Tim Knopp, Daniel Bonham, Suzanne Weber, Dennis Linthicum and Lynn Findle, had filed a lawsuit against the secretary of state over the decision.

The walkout, which was the longest in Oregon's history, resulted in hundreds of bills being stalled, according to The Associated Press.

The judicial branch is the most screwed up part of our government. Aside from the Civil Service.

So, if voters passed a law that said any politician that voted a tax increase and/or their own pay raise could not run for reelection, that would be, OK? Or voted for gun control?
Wait until they pass laws that say conservatives can’t vote.

The legal system has been flooded with new age law school grads indoctrinated by a system saturated with anti-American doctrine. Being able to indict a ham sandwich is real.

Where was this law when the Flee-baggers in Wisconsin were stalling Governor Walker’s reforms?

If they were Democrats they’d be “deemed” re-elected.

But it was ok when Dems left Texas doing the same thing.

The Dems play hardball, Repubs cower in fear.

This needs to be fast-tracked. The SCOTUS is useless at times.

It’s Oregon.. republicans should walk away, the state will collapse in 8 - 10 years then walk in, take it back and clean it up.

Article 1 section 10 of the US Constitution says: No State shall...pass any...ex post facto Law

I seems to me that this makes the ruling unconstitutional. An appeal to a federal court is in order.

The article is bunk.

The ruling was for walkouts which occurred last year, AFTER the 2022 law.
