Turkey approves Sweden's NATO membership bid after 20-month delay

Turkey's parliament ratified Sweden's NATO membership bid on Tuesday, clearing the biggest remaining hurdle to expanding the Western military alliance after 20 months of delay.

Turkey's general assembly, where President Tayyip Erdogan's ruling alliance holds a majority, voted 287-55 to approve the application that Sweden first made in 2022 to bolster its security in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

All NATO members need to approve applications from countries seeking to join the alliance. When Sweden and Finland asked to join in 2022, Turkey raised objections over what it said was the two countries' protection of groups it deems terrorists.

It endorsed Finland's membership in April last year but, along with Hungary, had kept Sweden waiting. "We support NATO enlargement to improve the alliance's deterrence efforts... We hope Finland and Sweden's attitude towards fighting terrorism sets an example for our other allies," Fuat Oktay, head of parliament's foreign affairs commission and a ruling AK Party member, said during debate.

Erdogan finally got off the pot and chose his side, and it wasn't Putin's.

Congratulations are in order to Putin for doing more than anyone else in expanding NATO further to Muscovy's border and turning the Baltic Sea into the "NATO" Sea.

Go ahead and keep poking the bear. We won’t be satisfied until we have a full scale all out WW3 scenario.

The Sultan does what is best for the Sultan he’ll give the US the shaft at the appropriate time unless he is placated.

Right now his troops and planes attack Kurds in northern Syria and Iraq often.

Groups aligned with the USA.

That’s the tradeoff for this IMHO.

A country joining a defensive alliance of its own free will is not “poking the bear”. A country invading another and annexing large swaths of its territory, however, is another matter. Everyone seems to understand this basic distinction, except for Russia and its moronic apologists.

That’s great news for a country that sat out WWII, claiming to be neutral to appease Hitler.

Sweden and Finland would not have asked to join NATO if the bear had not been poking its neighbors. The bear should go back to sleep and no one would bother it.

Putin driving Finland and Sweden into NATO has changed a great amount of what the situation was 2 years ago.

The war mongers can’t wait they are messing their pants for a fight.

Sweden was warned earlier this month by its defense leadership that war is coming.

The Baltic countries across from Sweden are kicking out ethnic Russians hoping to provide a catalyst for conflict.

Hungary has not approved Sweden’s membership; but apparently there is to be a meeting between Hungary and Sweden to discuss the matter.

The USA should not be in an aliance with radical Islamic Turkey and the MAGA-hating LGBT nations of W. Europe. These powers are a far greater threat to the USA of our founding gfathers than Russia.

The world’s largest nuclear force was built to destroy us and is aimed at us, that enemy and its friends of Communist China, Communist Korea, and Iran, and any other dark force it can gather is a greater threat to us than our allies.

The Turkish military told Erdogan and Turkey’s parliament that if they didn’t they would overthrow Erdogan. The Turkish military has done this in the past when the Turkish government opposed NATO.
