We have foreigners in our military, I’m not aware of a time in American history when we haven’t.

Russia does it, they will trade citizenship not only for you and your wife and kids but for your parents as well.

Rome didn’t collapse for bringing foreigners into its army. It fell, in part, for OVER-relying on foreigners and, more so, stationing foreigners on the very borders at which they were recruited.

When the Germans IN ROME’s army realized that they were Rome’s army, they realized that Rome was theirs for the taking. Ditto, the Arabs in that part of the world.

Formerly, legions mixed foreigners with citizens, giving them a path to citizenship, AND stationed the foreigners in opposite ends of the empire. For example, a legion recruited in Africa would be stationed at the border between Rome and Germany.

Germany, like us, should move to a merit-based immigration policy, with military service counted toward merit; and, Germany, like us, should primarily depend on citizens to fill out the ranks.

I will also mention that I love the ideas of territorial defense forces and universal military training. We need to toughen up our military-age population.

If approved, it will allow the Bundeswehr to build strength

Recruiting foreigners into your army is not "building strength". It's acknowledgement of weakness, and a willingness to keep tolerating weakness.

Your point about foreigners joining the German army in WWII is well-taken. If the Nazis weren’t such Nazis, they could have filled out their ranks from foreigners, esp. Ukrainians. The problem is that the Nazis were Nazis. Another problem is that without the oil from Baku, they could hardly support the forces they did have, no less than a million plus additional forces from Ukraine and other conquered/liberated places.

In contrast, during WWII, we raised forces from all of our people, including Blacks, Filipinos and Japanese, as well as foreigners who joined us as individuals one way or another, and Brazilians, Mexicans and others who joined us as integral units. Of course, after the war, we had the civil rights movements so that all of our people would be treated fairly.

Bringing your enemies into your own military?

What could possibly go wrong?

Yes we have had non citizens in our military. But times have changed and so has our military and not for the betterment. With major recruitment shortfalls and the flooding of our borders with illegals, it won’t be long before the woke military will follow the footsteps of the blue cities and recruit them into our forces and a lot of these illegals are not here to assimilate into our culture. Same problem Germany and the entire west nations are facing.

Having the Muslim fight your battles for you may sound good, but you'll end up losing more then just your country..

This is what Churchill had to say about the Islam..

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.”

Even Churchill believed the fallacy that Christianity "struggled against science". How disappointing.

Even in the Middle Ages, standing armies were such an expensive proposition, that many European nations mostly used foreign mercenaries in their fights.

The Swiss Guards defending the Pope, from the 15th Century are the remnants of one such mercenary group. The French Foreign Legion is a more modern incarnation, from 1831.

Unlike the French, who still have foreign territories under their control, where their mercenaries are parked, the Germans do not have any such territories, so would likely have to buy and develop an island for their purposes.

They also must follow the French rules for mercenaries:

They can never travel to their sponsoring nation.

They must be led by loyal military officers of their sponsoring nation.

They must have a distinctive uniform.

Their communications, transportation and logistics are under the control of their sponsoring nation’s military.

etc.

I don’t think the French Foreign Legion were ever mercenaries and they sure aren’t today.

The Legion is part of the French Army.

In 1987, a much younger version of me found himself in a military hospital for an emergency surgery. The hospital tech who was preparing me for surgery was a SSG who was a bit older than most NCO’s I worked with, and the doctors clearly respected him. Turns out, he was from Mexico and had been a surgeon. He had come to the US and enlisted. At the time, the US army didn’t recognize foreign medical credentials. So, he started as a Sergeant and intended to work his way up. I hope he made it, he was a great caregiver.
