Russia jails officer for buying wrong hardware to protect Crimean bridge from Ukrainian attack - TASS
Reuters ^ | January 16, 2024 | Reuters Staff Report

A court on Tuesday sentenced a former senior officer in the National Guard to six years in a prison colony after convicting him of buying equipment unable to protect the bridge which links southern Russia to Crimea, the TASS state news agency reported.

TASS said that Colonel Sergei Volkov had purchased two radar-based air defence systems for 395 million roubles ($4.5 million) which were meant to be able to bring down Ukrainian attack drones by suppressing their signal.

A military court in Moscow had determined that the equipment - which was also meant to protect a gas pipeline running from southern Russia to Crimea - needed modernizing and upgrading to be effective and had found Volkov guilty of abusing his position, it said.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 in a move that Kyiv and the West do not recognize and say was illegal.

Volkov was reported to deny his guilt, saying he had acted within the law, and that the equipment was in fact intended to protect National Guard troops in various locations.

“Well he won’t ever do that again...”

Hell, if the US did the same (hold people accountable), we would not be in the HUGE mess that we’re in.

Second guessing officers who are attempting to do their duty is bad policy.

I do not know what happened in this case.

I am familiar with a somewhat similar case involving the Spanish Empire and the Sack of Panama. (1671)

The officer in charge did everything he possibly could to defend Panama. He was made a scapegoat and ended up spending several years in Spanish prisons until he was eventually exonerated.

It is not a good way to get maximum performance from your military.

Officers will spend more time creating paperwork to cover their @ss instead of time on the actual military business at hand. They will become timid and extremely careful to have a "consensus" on major decisions, so as to not worry about being made a scapegoat.

Without hearing the evidence it is hard to say what really happened here. It may be that corruption played a part with the officer purposely buying substandard equipment in return for a kickback, or it may be that he is really a scapegoat. OTOH, England shot Admiral Byng for little more which lead Voltaire to comment that “Itis good to kill an admiral from time to time, in order to encourage the others”.

—”But I’m sure he got a good deal.”

That and when he gets out he will have a huge pension if not held in rubles.

One problem.

Russia has been turning the heat off and removing blankets in their prisons to encourage “volunteers” for Ukraine.

Putin is so clever, what will he do next?

He’s getting off light.

The pentagon can’t account for billions, but no one is ever held responsible.

Heads should roll (literally)…

When have our perfumed princesses ever been held accountable for anything? The Bradley Fighting Vehicle debacle got men promoted and whistleblowers kicked out! I won’t even mention lost wars…

Not a good idea. Unless he was derelict in duty, criminalizing military failure is an open invitation to scapegoating. If he had taken bribes for purchasing defective equipment, that would be one thing, but being mistaken is not a crime. The selection of military leaders needs to be rigorous and serious. DEI will be the death of the American military, and unfortunately, many troops, but that is the direct result of the civilian leaders we have elected.

I’m pretty sure what happened is he bought inadequate equipment, and then failed to maintain it, because he pocketed the money saved.

Slovakian PM Fico: Will Veto Ukrainian NATO Membership Bid, No More Military Aid to Kiev – Supports Hungary’s Orbán Against EU Pressure

The new Slovakian Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has publicly confirmed what he had been saying since his campaign: he will not follow the previous government’s policies towards Ukraine.

In fact, Fico has now vowed to thwart Kiev’s plans in a number of ways, from vetoing their NATO membership, to stopping all military aid, up until joining Hungary’s blockage of EU’s €50 billion package.

‘I know what I’m going with (to the meeting with the Ukrainian prime minister), I’m going with humanitarian aid, we’ll confirm that they will not receive any weapons from the Slovak army and from state warehouses, I’ll say that there are things on which our views are completely different. […] I will say that I am against Ukraine’s membership in NATO, that I will use the right of veto and block it because this will be the foundation of the Third World War’ – Fico said on Saturday.”

One of the main features of the Current Regime is to diffuse responsibility and accountability so that no-one is ever punished for failure.

The politicians say they rely on the experts. The experts claim they just give advice, but didn’t make the decisions.

At DOD, the guy supposedly in charge is in the hospital for 3 weeks and no-one notices (except, perhaps, his Russian and Chinese surveillance).
