Ukraine downs two Russian military command and reconnaissance planes in huge blow for Putin

Ukraine said on Monday that it downed two Russian military command aircraft over the Sea of Asov, saying it had carried out a 'successful' mission against Moscow's forces.

Officials said the country's air force took out an A-50 radar-detection plane worth £260 million, as well as an IL-22 aerial command plane, as they flew over the Sea of Azov on Sunday.

The Sea of Azov lies between Russia and Ukraine, but Moscow controls its entire coast after seizing large swathes of southeastern Ukraine during its invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014.

'Minus an enemy long-range radar detection aircraft, A-50, and the aerial command centre Il-22!' the air force said.

'The special operation in the Azov region was successful,' it said on social media.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief, Valery Zaluzhny, said Kyiv had 'destroyed' the planes.

'I am grateful to the Air Force for the excellently planned and conducted operation in Azov region!' he said on Telegram.

A senior Ukrainian politician and the deputy head of the country's parliamentary national security committee, Yuri Mysyagin, said:

'At about 21:00 [on Sunday], Ukrainian units fired at two aircraft of the Russian Air Force, namely an A-50 AWACS aircraft and an IL-22, located over the Sea of Azov.

'The A-50 was shot down, and the IL-22 was shot down, but was in the air and trying to get to the nearest airfield, but disappeared from the radar, after the descent began, in the Kerch area.'

Moscow did not comment on the claims, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters he had 'no information' about the incident and that further questions should be directed to the defence ministry.

Not to hijack the thread but...... there is a report today that the Russians are reinforcing their navy in the Black Sea?

I thought Turkey closed access to Russian war vessels.

IL-22 was able to land. More than half the crew on board killed or wounded by Patriot missile shrapnel.

Somewhat relevant...video clip of a quick footed soldier dodging a kamikaze drone. Almost got blown to bits. Not sure which side he's on but I'll guess Ukraine. https://www.itemfix.com/v?t=78gd2y

For the IL-22 to be flyable, the Patriot shrapnel must have hit the aft fuselage & empennage.

Looking at the rudder, it appears that the flight controls are connected by cables.

The elevators and rudder have trim tabs, so the flight controls are not hydraulic boosted.

As long as the cables to the trim tabs are connected, the plane is flyable.

Looking at the damage in the photo, the plane will never fly again.

Engines and avionics are probably salvageable.

The planes were lured into a trap by Ukraine. It was a setup that started the day before. Russia was led to believe there was going to a Storm Shadow launch against the Kerch bridge.

Brilliant.

So far, I have not seen any maps that show possible launch locations for the Patriot.

Russia was led to believe there was going to a Storm Shadow launch against the Kerch bridge.

So, Ukraine knows that Russia is reading some of Ukraine's message traffic. Cool.

The setup may have started the day before, but mission planning probably started shortly after Gerasimov was injured or killed.

“That plane looks like a dump. Have they no pride?”

A little duct tape and Bondo and they’re back in business.

The image is from 2021. The Admiral Makarov had been part of the Black Sea fleet for years. It just was not operational, recovering from severe damage.
