VICTORIA — The City of Victoria has terminated a city employee who cut the head off a dead cougar in November.

The city said in a statement that it had “concluded its investigation process into this incident and we can confirm the individual responsible is no longer employed by the city.”

The city confirmed the employee had been fired.

The city worker had initially been given a written warning after the head of a dead cougar was cut off while the carcass was being stored in a city facility.

Victoria police shot and killed the cougar on Nov. 21, 2023, after it was spotted prowling in the Gorge-Selkirk Waterfront area most of the day.

I don't understand: The cougar was already dead / had been killed by Animal Control officials because it was a menace.

What possible crime could the Victoria employee be guilty of here?

I'll admit that the head isn't perhaps the most-nutritious part of the carcass, but when making stew, it really shouldn't matter.

Regards,

Really. Just lose the report and take the whole carcass.

It was probably headed for the taxidermist. No pun intended.

The cougar must have escaped from a strip mall bar.

What is the problem here?
BTW, cougars are pretty common. Here in AZ, there is a convoluted system of hunting permits, but cougar permit is actually the easiest to get.
But these cougars, they are so smart!
I must admit I have never seen one in wild! And I have seen all other hunted animals, each of them, many times!
Cougars will see you before you ever notice them!

So even if the permits are very easy to get, there are just only few successful cougar hunts!

It would interfere with testing for rabies if the head is missing or mishandled. I suggest this because they generally kill an animal that was agressive and bit a person to check for rabies. ref https://www.dshs.texas.gov/sites/default/files/IDCU/health/zoonosis/animal/bites/information/bite7-20.pdf

As to the dump them etc, there is also a golf ball brand “Cougar”. Was playing with a guy who mentioned their slogan should be, “there’s nothing like pounding a Cougar!”.

All wildlife,up north and down here, is property of the state.
It doesn’t matter where you get it.

And also...there's a reason you have "safe search" on when searching the term "cougar"...

Misappropriation, theft or destruction of government property without authorization are usually grounds for termination. Gotta keep up an image of propriety while you’re ripping off the public you know.
