As far as I can see, this story is being covered as sort “Well, golly, that doesn’t look good. You know, feels sort of wrong ...”
As opposed to: “The law has been violated. People need to be punished. The legal proceedings need to be scrubbed to remove their taint.”
I’m not sure this is really being addressed as anything more than “That’s a shame”.
They know something is wrong, but they just hate to admit it..................
