Just read the article on a shiga outbreak in the homeless in California due to poor hygiene practices.

The heat of pasteurization kills harmful bacteria such as salmonella, listeria and E. coli O157:H7. These disease-causing bacteria can even be in raw milk that is produced with good sanitation practices.

We always drink raw milk on the farm. Our somatic cell count is one of the lowest large herd counts in the state.

“The heat of pasteurization kills harmful bacteria such as salmonella, listeria and E. coli. These disease-causing bacteria can even be in raw milk that is produced with good sanitation practices.”

The problem is that pasturation kills the good gut flora too. Calves tend to get scours and diarrhea and often need antibiotic treatment to survive. We find that feeding the young calves yogart in addition to colostrum gets healthy gut flora going and prevents other bacteria from flourishing thus preventing scours.

The same is true in pasturizing yogart, Kombucha, sauerkraut, vinegar, and many other foods. It kilks the good flora.
