Andrew L. Stigler: Would Ronald Reagan abandon Ukraine to Russia?
chicagotribune ^ | 01/04/2023 | Andrew L. Stigler

As the fighting in Ukraine continues, some representatives in Congress, primarily Republicans, oppose additional financial and military support for Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s ongoing invasion.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has said he has reservations about continued support for Ukraine because he believes that there is inadequate oversight on how the aid is spent and sees no strategy to win. Johnson also argued that America’s border problems should take priority, a preference shared by many on the right. Congress will take up the issue again this year, but the future of American aid to Ukraine is in serious doubt.

Four decades ago, a Republican president supported a different victim of Russian aggression, in a situation similar to the one that the United States faces today. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, President Jimmy Carter offered limited aid to the Afghani resistance. But it was a Republican who championed and dramatically expanded funding for the Afghan mujahedeen during most of the nine-year effort to compel a Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. That leader was the icon of the GOP, Ronald Reagan.

He wouldn’t have instigated the war to begin with.

Russia would never have invaded Ukraine in first place, under Reagan.

Reagan would have never done the CIA coup thing in Ukraine that unfolded and changed the government. He would not have directly provoked Russia on it’s doorstep.

So no, Reagan would have never been in this position in the first place. Trump would have never allowed it to escalate. Only Obama-Biden would have picked this path.

Dunno. He fought the USSR. And successfully. I don’t think he would defend Nazis, organ traffickers or human traffickers. So I’d guess no. He wouldn’t defend Ukraine

One problem. When Reagan was President, Ukraine WAS Russia and there had been no doubt of it for over 200 years.

They wouldn’t have needed to. The Ukraine SSR was a proud part of the USSR and a voting member of the U.N.—the USSR got three votes in the UN, the USSR, Ukraine and Belarus.

Reagan would NOT have defended Ukraine. He would have abided by the agreement with Russia and Ukraine.

Reagan also would not have approved all the NATO add-ons, in respect for that same agreement with Russia.

U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, gave assurances to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev that NATO would not expand into Eastern Europe following the reunification of Germany in 1990.

Ronald Reagan would be apologizing that Future NATO Leaders betrayed his wishes

Who cares. Stupid question. President Reagan isn’t around to make that decision. The question to ask is, What would O’Bonzo do? He’s not fond of white people.

Reagan is the new Randolph Scott for Ukrainiacs. Weird to see the establishment so reverent for Reagan now. They barely tolerated him then and made sure to saddle him with Bush.

And now they have adopted the left’s caricature of him and cast him as a warlike maniac.

Bad question, because Ukraine wasn’t in the 80’s what its today, and Ukraine isn’t even what it was in the 90s after the fall of the evil empire (Soviet Union). So the question is a practice in futility, because the whole geopolitical landscape of the world is completely different.

In two words?

Stupid question!

Its like the discussions asking if Kansas City Chiefs of the 2020s, would beat the Steelers of the 70s.

Who comes up with these stupid asinine questions?

I’ll answer that myself.

Those who are ignorant of historical facts.

Whatever - very nice New Year’s present from the Stupid Party for Vlad. He gets Ukraine on a platter, and can prepare to take Poland - as well as the Arctic north.
