During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the city was largely destroyed as a result of fighting, with no civilians living in the town since November 2022.

Ukraine was dug in Maryinka and was using it as base to attack the city of Donetsk and had been well before the war started.

The population in Donetsk city can finally have some peace without the Ukraine military terrorizing them. Clearing out the Ukrainian military from Maryinka is a final step in securing the Donetsk oblast.

The civilian population in Donetsk City would have street parties if Pushilin and his crooks were rounded up and strung from every surviving lamp post.

Pushilin complained multiple times to the Kremlin that without RF boots on the ground, his utterly fake utterly gangster government had no popular support and wouldn't last five minutes. In other words, when Donetsk was an unevacuated city populated mostly by Russian Ukrainians, Pushilin had to beg Russia to bus in some Russians on vacation just to make up the numbers for a street protest.

No wonder the DPR never held any elections.

The reason Pushilin panicked in Jan-Feb 2021 had nothing to do with Ukrainian Nazis about to commit a genocide... it was the simple knowledge that he was maybe a month away from losing his Kremlin wage, his unearned office, his fake army and his fake revolution.

By April 2021, if Russia hadn't had some convincing argument to launch its SMO, the trumped-up bullcrap that the DPR leadership had presented for overthrowing democratic control of the Donbas would've crumbled so completely and so obviously that even Putin would've turned his back.

So Putin and his Lugansk counterpart concocted between them the brilliant wheeze of "evacuating" thousands of Russians out of Donbas, into Russia, on the basis of a (now confirmed to be totally nonexistent) "imminent" invasion by Ukraine, with a side order of fantasy genocide.
