Slovakia to Veto Ukraine’s NATO Bid, Will Not Seize Russian Property

Slovakia will not permit Ukraine to become a member of NATO, Prime Minister Robert Fico declared in an interview with the Slovak outlet InfoVojna on December 19.

In June, the U.S.-led military alliance refrained from offering Kyiv an actual invitation at the summit hosted by Lithuania. According to the joint communiqué from the Vilnius meeting, NATO would only be in a position to offer membership “when allies agree and conditions are met.”

“We will not agree with Ukraine’s membership in NATO, because that would be the start of World War Three,” Fico said.

He highlighted Bratislava’s opposition to such a scenario, indicating a readiness to exercise its veto power within NATO to stop Kyiv from joining if necessary.

“As long as I have the opportunity to influence the Slovak political scene, I will use the right to veto such a decision,” he added.

The Ukrainian government has made NATO membership a key aim since 2018. Moscow has repeatedly cautioned that such a step would threaten Russian national security, and has singled out Ukrainian neutrality as one of the goals of its military operation that started in February 2022.

Fico, a social democrat, hitherto held power in Bratislava from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018. He became prime minister again in October, leading a three-party coalition government. Fico’s latest government has adopted a notably stringent stance on the Ukrainian conflict compared to most other EU members.

During his campaign trail, Fico had pledged that he would not send “a single bullet” to Kyiv.

Upon assuming power, Fico speedily undid the pro-EU policies of his predecessor when it came to Ukraine, stopping deliveries of free weapons to Kyiv and encouraging a peaceful solution of the conflict with Russia.

For instance, Fico last month rejected a proposal to send €40.3 million ($43 million) worth of militar...

I think WWIII with Russia has started, the west just does not want to admit it.

WWII with Hitler started similarly, with some in the west saying Hitler was not going to go “too far”.

Except our meddling in Ukraine and threats to expand NATO to Russia's borders is what caused the war in Ukraine.

Russia repeatedly sought to AVOID war with the Minsk Accords, coming to us with its security concerns in 12/21 and by negotiating a peace deal in Turkey in March of last year.

The ones pushing toward WW III are the fools that want push the false narrative the Russia and Putin have been the aggressors in Ukraine. And, such fools are incredibly dangerous to the well-being of American citizens.

“Except our meddling in Ukraine and threats to expand NATO to Russia’s borders is what caused the war in Ukraine.”

Nonsense. Putin always has his sights on Ukraine, regardless of what the west did or did not do. “NATO expansion” was his excuse, because NATO expansion was not without regard to what Putin was already doing in the region.

Kazan. . . .Kazan. . . . Ding! - the penny finally drops . . . ..Why did it take so long? . . .

Old Tatar city on the Volga, Conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552.. Establishing a paradigm for Muskovite foreign policy that continues to this day.

So, is that birthplace? Home today? Or just chosen as a tribute to the birthplace of Muskovite imperialism?

What's nonsense is YOUR narrative.

We fomented a illegal coup in 2014 and setoff a civil war. We funded and trained neo-Nazis and Ukrainian nationalists and allowed them to persecute the ethnic Russian population in Donetsk and Lugansk. We armed Ukraine with offensive weapons. We were running biolabs with deadly pathogens in them in Ukraine. We teased NATO membership for Ukraine after promising in the early 1990s that we wouldn't expand NATO eastward. We encouraged Ukraine to renege on the Minsk Accords, which, if implemented, would have prevent the present war.

If Russia or China were doing anything like that Mexico, WE, justifiably, would invade.

Warmongers and Russian haters like yourself have had us closer to a hot war with Russia, WWIII and nuclear war than we ever were during the Cold War.

You and your fellow zeepers are grave threat to the safety of American citizens and the world.

Poppycock. We will see what is left of Ukraine and how it will be carved up. The Russian provinces will no doubt remain with Vlad, but much talk about the land going back to its historical owners- Poland, Romania and Hungary.

As Vlad now has liberated the largest part of the the ethnic Russian provinces, we shall see if Poland, Romania and Hungary are willing to rebuild their lands.

Do remember, Lughansk and Donetsk voted for their Independence from Ukraine back in 2015….and the current five provinces under Russian governance already voted to become a part of the Russian Federation.

Latest Duma discussions show they also want Odessa and Kherson, which I suspect they will gain. Basically the Ukies can keep West of the Dniepner, which would give Vlad a large enough buffer zone against any further NATO threat ( if they survive their boondoggle).

Good to see you have a good grasp on the facts. What most fail to see will be the trials when the war is over. The Duma has duly noted, collected and prepared for this event. Much the UN is aware of, and much like the Nuremberg trials- the truth will be discovered. The Ukies themselves will be like many Germans, utter horror at what their government did.

I remain amazed by how brain washed so many on FR are about this war. The MSM that lied to them about COVID and Trump is lying to them about UKR/RU.

But since they (like many of us) were raised during thecold war against USSR, they swallow the lies without examination.

It is the same people lying to them now as were lying to them in 2016 and beyond about Trump and COVID.

To be honest I didn’t know much about the neocons operation to start this war until I did-my-own-research (tm). Which I got into a habit of during COVID.

Putin/RU may not be a “good guy” but the reason the shooting started and people started dying is all on the neocons.

I wonder how many here know UKR was the world’s largest supplier of baby/fetus parts for “medical” research before the war started? It was a multi-billion dollar industry.

You have it backwards. WE started WWIII, and Putin called our bluff on trying to bring in the Sudetenland. We kept pushing and pushing. Putin learned the Chamberlain lesson and enforced it when we refused to negotiate.

Victoria “Fat Warmongering Pig” Nuland reacted in horror by instantly wolfing down 18 triple cheeseburgers, 13 Super Sized bags of extra greasy fries, 12 large bags of potato chips, 7 Family Sized boxes of McNuggets and four gallons of Coke. Then she sat down to eat.

Trump can’t reappear as POTUS fast enough. We never had a reason to war with Russia. Trump knows it. He’s the adult in the room.

Russians are just not likable. It’s not reason enough to go to war.

Well said. Can't stand them myself. They and Youkes are generally untrustworthy - always on the lookout for the next con to pull on you. Gets real tired dealing with them, real fast. But yeah, not good enough a reason to go to war with them or help fund their endless tribal beefs.

Krauts are worse. Polaks are dumb. Brits invented racism. It’s a 4-5 way tossup who were the worst colonizers. Put that all together in a stew and you end up with the bloodiest continent in world history.

BJ stayed out of Rwanda. A lesson to be learned?
