It was an intelligence failure of epic proportions, from a country whose intelligence apparatus is supposed to be among the best in the world. Questions need to be answered, but here's my take:

On reading the details of this attack, my reaction is "kill them all". The people in Israeli military/intelligence have been dealing with Palestinians for decades. They want an excuse to "kill them all" and now they have it.

The trash about warning signs is self serving gaslighting. In retrospect there are always “signs”. There were hundreds of other signs that didn’t materialize. It is so easy to point fingers in retrospect and to manipulate the storylines to assign false blame. The blame is completely on Hamas.

It is easy for dedicated people to blame themselves for not accomplishing the impossible. It is because they care and they hold themselves to an unachievable standard.

Hamas is evil, they lied, they wove a cloak over their plans and they planned much worse than they accomplished. That is why they must be wiped out and their strongholds destroyed. No people could be safe in the situation that Israel was in. Hamas was a ticking time bomb; a knife pointed at the heart of Israel.
