People should stock up on battery-powered radios and torches, as well as candles and first aid kits in order to prepare for power cuts or digital communications going down, the deputy prime minister reportedly said.

According to the Times, Oliver Dowden described the supplies as “analogue capabilities that it makes sense to retain” in a digital age during a visit to Porton Down, the UK’s military laboratory.

Dowden made the visit to coincide with his first annual risk and resilience statement, which he had promised to give last year when launching the government’s UK resilience framework.

As part of the statement, he announced the launch of a national “resilience academy” to help people and businesses prepare for future pandemics, natural disasters and cyber-attacks.

Good policy : Tell people to bring kit torches into their homes.

I have over a dozen oil lamps and hurricane lamps, mainly because they are old school and I like them: Great at night in the courtyard with a warm fire in the fire pit. And, if we lose power, we’ll have light for the house.

How about torches and pitchforks instead?

Yup. A little old fashioned accountability would be refreshing.

Britspeak again. What they mean by “torches” is “propane-fueled flamethrowers to incinerate the politicians.” It’s way more environmentally conscious.

One would think that most modern homes would not be set up to accommodate torches. One would need a sconce to hold it to the wall and some sort of ventilation for the smoke.

LOL !

Just for anyone who doesn’t know, in the UK a battery flashlight is often referred to as a torch.

The fact that their electricity grid is so compromised and unstable that they need this... they are back to the 1970’s when I was a boy there, with Arthur Scargill’s strikes and the power cuts.

I guess the common factor is leftist stupidity and control causes it in both cases.

Well, better for M16 to help American 'intelligence' hunt down Trump supporters than to protect their own people... Oh and while we're at it, let's all allow a few million more people into our civilized countries that hate us... That should make life easier.../s

I have different types of AA solar lights with long cords for their little solar panel.

In a sustained blackout I can run the cord out the window and set the panel on the roof in the sunlight (or just outside)while closing the window and letting the light charge itself and auto-turn on at night. I can run them out the windows of the entire house for adequate lighting.

AA solar can also charge my AA batteries for the reading headlamp, radio, and small lanterns.

Here is an example of one version.
