Zero chance this would be allowed to happen. Ever hear of the civil war? Texas is far too valuable to be allowed to leave. Military bases, natural resources, the list goes on and on.

“Zero chance this would be allowed to happen.”

The Democrats would be happy to rid themselves of the conservative states so they could finally impose their Soviet fantasies on their remaining constituents.

Yes, although I dislike the anti-Trump author F.H. Buckley (no relation) he wrote American Secession which goes into the issues involved. You are onto some key ones. The old US and the new free states would each want someone else to take care of the national debt and budget baby after the divorce.

I say the Commonwealth of Massachusetts should pay./S

Absolutely correct. Zero chance of happening, no matter how we vote or how much we want it.

Sheer military power--not law--is all that prevents the withdrawal of Texas from the Union (Texit). It is the same as the withdrawal of Britain from the European Union.

In fact, sheer military power--not law--prevented South Carolina from seceding from the Union in 1860. No law prevented it. The South Carolina State Legislature had ratified the Constitution and had authorized entry into the Union, and that same Legislature had the authority to revoke the ratification and authorization, which is exactly what it did. There was no law to prevent it.

The prevention of Texas--or South Carolina--from withdrawing from the Union by the US Federal Government and its military is not a matter of law. It is a matter of power. It is the same as if the Government of the European Union and its military action prevented the UK from withdrawing.
