More than anything else, I believe it was actions of the Legislature that made it possible for Romney to run for Senator and of course once on the ballot almost a shoe in based on Party affiliation.
Don’t have time to look up the bill right now, but it was the one allowing signature gathering, bypassing the long standing precinct election for ballot access.

Notice how none of the Senate Repubs have said anything about Romney endorsing Democrats over Trump.
That’s because they agree with him, but he is retiring so can be honest.
Trump will be dealing with the same Repub sabotage in 2025 as he had in 2017.
