A West Midlands Police officer allegedly 'tipped off' a child rape suspect who had fled the country, a court has heard. Sergeant Iftikhar Ali has been accused of reading crime reports and warning the male how serious the case was.
The suspect subsequently skipped bail and has never returned to face trial, a jury was told. Ali, aged 43, stands trial at Birmingham Crown Court where he denies perverting the course of justice as well as multiple counts of misconduct in a public office and breaching data protection.
Continuing his opening of the case today, Wednesday, prosecutor James Curtis stated that on November 25, 2016 a man was arrested for the rape on an underage girl following a report made on September 15 that year.
He added that co-defendant Azhar Mahmood, 37, knew the suspect and allegedly 'texted Sgt. Ali asking him to look up the incident on police computers'. The prosecutor told the court that Ali did so, spending 48 minutes reading the various logs, and confirmed to Mahmood that 'it's very bad'.
Mr Curtis said that the suspect subsequently did not answer bail on April 7, the following year and was circulated as 'wanted'. He added: "The obvious inference is that Sgt. Ali has used his very special position having access to highly sensitive police records to research the investigation into a potentially extremely serious crime; rape of a young teenager.
"Who is he doing it for? He's doing it on behalf of his gym contact Azhar Mahmood, clearly asking him to do that on behalf of the suspect offender. In doing so, spelling out just how serious the investigation is, he effectively tips him off. He stays in Pakistan and doesn't come back for trial.
"Sgt. Ali must have known why he was making these researches - he wasn't anything to do with the investigation - and his inevitable warning of how bad it was, what effect it had. The proof is in the pudding the suspect hasn't returned since. Sgt. Ali bears a significant part of the responsibility to that."
Ali, of Longmore Road, Shirley, Solihull, is currently suspended from the force. He has been accused of regularly accessing confidential police information illegitimately between 2015 and 2017 to help his acquaintances. He has denied 11 counts of misconduct in a public office, 11 counts of breaching data protection and one charge of perverting the course of justice.
