Manchin passes on Senate re-election bid, setting up likely Republican gain

Sen. Joe Manchin announced Thursday that he wil not vie for re-election next year, making Republicans the favorites to pick up another seat in the upper chamber of Congress.

Manchin (D-WV), a perennial thorn in the side of the Biden administration, would have likely faced a fierce battle against popular Republican Gov. Jim Justice had he decided to run.

“I’ve made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate,” Manchin declared in a video posted to X.

The 76-year-old senator was an increasingly isolated Democrat in a state that former President Donald Trump won by almost 30 percentage points in 2020.

Manchin’s team voiced confidence in public that he would prevail if he decided to defend his seat in the 2024 cycle, but polling generally showed him even with or behind Justice.

The West Virginian’s announcement comes weeks after another centrist senator, Mitt Romney (R-Utah), also opted not to run for re-election next year.

US Rep Alex Mooney is running in the primary against Jim Justice.

Read a bit about him. He (at least from first appearance) looks suitable as well.

I just wanna win the GOP to win this seat.

Manchin passes on Senate re-election bid, setting up likely Republican gain

With Ronna McDaniel and her intrepid RNC colleagues setting election strategy for 2024, Manchin will probably be replaced by someone far to the left of him.

Even if that happens, the Majority Leader and all committee chairs will be Republicans, and the MAGA-niks will have a voice as to who that’ll be in each.

So, potentially, 2 Republican pickups in the Senate.

Never underestimate the stupidity of WV voters, just like Kentucky. They will give a Republican candidate for President a 20% point margin of win. Then elect a Rat commie Senator or Governor. Head scratcher.

They’re not trying hard enough in Montana. Tester has been lucky due to timing. 2006, 2012, and 2018-unpopular GOP Presidents in office and a bad candidate in 2012. This could be his biggest test but Governor Gianforte wants to stay in the governors office and not challenge him. To think the GOPe wants this unknown Sheehy to buy into the club is offensive. Rosendale already lost to Tester. Talk about insanity. I think the higher ups in our party knew Tester was running in favorable years. Now he has incumbancy in his favor and we don’t want it bad enough.

Same thing in Ohio. Sherrod Brown will be 72 btw.

Manchin co wrote the most anti 2A legislation under the blessing of Obama. Every truth we need to know about him is in that legislation.

Manchin was a very popular governor who governed conservatively. His performance during the Sago mine disaster genuine or not won him kudos. (I think it was genuine, he’s from that area.) He was elected and reelected senator purely due to those two events. As he moved left, he lost support, he just barely won the last time. He knows his time as senator is done.

Justice will win which in some ways is unfortunate. I’ve discussed his past corrupt business practices before. Mooney is the more MAGNA candidate, but Trump didn’t endorse. Mooney will not win the primary which is a shame. I will be voting for him.

the NRSC is separate from the RNC, but they haven’t exactly been doing a bang-up job in recent years either. And the RNC is supposed to be the GOTV organization...again not exactly stellar operation in recent years. It was in 2016, but in 2017 to the present date Ronna McDaniel has been in charge. Wonder if it is just her that is the problem or if other talented staff also left? Priebus had gotten the RNC in tip top shape...he should not have been moved in favor of McDaniel.
