Milley: As we know failure to launch is not a rarity. Heck, it’s why Viagra and Ciallis make millions.

And to think that a couple of machines from the 70’s made it out of the solar system and are still functional.

Well, if this test was undertaken to make a statement to foes, it did alot of harm to our credibility.

Nuke us, chances are decent you wont get payback.

Makes me wonder if all those missiles in silos are any good and will fizzle when and if needed?

Possibly, nuclear weapons and the missiles that deliver them are relatively high maintenance equipment. The idea in movies such as "Battlefield Earth" of a nuclear bomb sitting around for hundreds of years without maintenance and still works is in it self fiction. As the Russian-Ukraine war shown, Russian maintenance is very poor and Putin (or whoever is in charge now) is very much wondering how many of their nuclear weapons will work.

“an anomaly”

Usually connected to “instructions were followed;” nowdays “under supervision” by remote cameras.

Such as, when voting.

So, “Yes, the procedures were being monitored,” but avoidance by, and of, the responsible parties, leaves room for the people who are supposed to be in charge, to avoid the “heat of reaction.”

Works on paper.

” how many of their nuclear weapons will work.”

I'm wondering how many of ours would work?

How many dry grease fittings..
weak Hydraulic hoses ...
corroded electrical connections ..
dust filled panels ..

Do we really have the maintenance programs to keep these things ready?

“Nuke us, chances are decent you wont get payback.”

Don’t take this failed test so final. There is more than just CONUS stationed nuclear sites.

Today, U.S. tactical nuclear weapons remain at six bases in five NATO member countries, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey.

Currently, the U.S. has 83 nuclear-powered ships: 72 submarines, 10 aircraft carriers and one research vessel. These NPWs make up about forty percent of major U.S. naval combatants, and they visit over 150 ports in over 50 countries, including approximately 70 ports in the U.S. and three in Japan.

In the CONUS, the main firing sustems are located at the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming; the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana; and the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota.

But it doesn’t stop there. Other nuclear weapons are stored at an estimated 24 geographical locations in 11 US states and five European countries with the largest cache at the Kirtland Underground Munitions and Maintenance Storage Complex south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Many of those have been dismantled in accordance with the world politics but many are still active and can be shipped and used quickly if necessary. But with all the existing and active locations throughout the world, the only reason there would be no response is if they were called off. Otherwise, we have a very active and destructive force. One problem at a testing area like Vandenberg is for experimenting purposes in most cases. This is why we practice launches. But I can promise you we have enough destructive operation power without Vandenberg to make everything dead on earth, a couple of times.

Yeah, that is the big “Question” on just about everything military at the moment. During the Cold War and through various organizations that tried to estimate military capabilities, it was estimated that 80% of our nuclear weapons were ready at any moment. Right Now? 50%? maybe lower? Aging systems are still capable with proper maintenance as the A-10 will attest to, but are they getting it? Your list of what needs attending is just the start.

” proper maintenance “

Something I've seen over the past 10 years ...

New hires , especially “woke” hires ... think their job is to
pass the time on their phone.
When paired with an older experienced person they just don't pick up the skills, institutional knowledge and care that they should.
When the old guy who knows where all the switches and valves are and when they need to be turned , retires.
Things just stop getting done.
It's happening all over.

Unless there is about 50,000 megatons of Cobalt encased nuclear warheads stored someplace on this planet, there isn’t enough nukes in the world to end all life on the planet. Make our current civilization level untenable? That is a definite as most countries are not prepared for any level of disaster, let alone a nuclear war. Having an 800 kiloton warhead explode over a city such as New York will be disaster the likes that the United States has never seen, there would be a million casualties at minimum.
