“military-style assault rifles” is one of the most meaningless phrases I can think of. They use the term ‘military-style’ because they know they are not real military weapons. As for ‘assault rifle’, there is not such definition. They could just as easily say ‘cool-looking 223s’ and be more accurate.

Actually, there is a definition for "assault rifle," and it's a firearm with select-fire capability (full vs. semi-auto). Legally it is a machine gun.
"Assault WEAPON" on the other hand is a meaningless term.
