There were plenty of mass rallies by the American Bund prior to Germany declaring war on the US.
Americans tend not to pay attention until there is a clarifying moment. We just aren’t there yet. Folks around here are early “arrives.” The rest will catch up.
To be fair, it wasn’t just in NYC - they were reasonably well spread out. NYC was just the largest and most well known by far. LA also had that problem, but so did a lot of Rust Belt and Lower Eastern Seaboard cities, and there was more than a couple centers in the South.
