Police in Maine planned to trawl the waters of the Androscoggin River with divers and sonar on Friday in their search for U.S. army reservist Robert R. Card, who they suspect is the mass shooter who killed 18 people at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston this week.
Officials ordered tens of thousands of area residents to shelter in place for their safety and indicated that the manhunt could continue for at least several days more.
Part of the search played out on live television Thursday night when officials executed several search warrants in the neighboring town of Bowdoin, where Card lives.
Law enforcement officials assembled at Card's house, surrounded by woods and fields, for more than two hours, with an FBI agent issuing orders over a bullhorn to "come out with your hands up," but apparently nobody was inside.
Mike Sauschuck, the Maine Department of Public Safety's commissioner, said at a press conference on Friday that a note was found during the search, but declined to say who wrote it or what it said.
Lewiston, a former textile hub of 38,000 people, and neighboring communities have been largely shut down since the Wednesday evening attacks to enable hundreds of officers to conduct their search. Colleges and public schools in the area canceled classes for a second day.
"I will ask the community to be as patient as possible with this process," Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre said at the press conference.
Asked if he was concerned that the trail is growing cold, Sauschuck said: "Every minute that this goes on we're more and more concerned."

I’m guessing he had another car at the boat ramp. He switched cars and drove far away. Whereabouts unknown.
Laura Loomer posted earlier, or even yesterday, that they’d find him in the river. Apparently he loved his time at the river. Hope they find his body and nobody has to endure his trial.
Also had a motorcycle.
But every press conference they tout themselves as great “heroes” doing a great job.
Meanwhile, it wasn't until a day or so AFTER the event that they finally went to his house (20 minutes away) and stood outside for 2 hours with a bullhorn, terrorizing the neighborhood.
And, of course, the ATF and FBI have jumped into this clownfest so they can give themselves more medals and awards for doing NOTHING.
The guy left a suicide note. He's probably dead. But they just keep dragging this out to terrorize and keep the area locked down.
This is just more distraction from the Biden clusterfrick. And more terrorizing people to support 2A restrictions. The government has every reason to drag this out.
Someone asked me if I thought they would keep the town locked down and the people terrorized for no reason. I asked them if they remember Covid.
Rather than lock people down, let them out with their weapons to hunt him down.

But whoever is running this mess is a clown. Didn't get to this guys house until the next day? I had Googled the house withing a few hours of the event. I knew just where it was. The cops should have known as well.
Surely with all the cameras now, somebody would have captured this guy on video.

It's a beautiful state and I've had a lot of good times there. But it is a poor and rather backward place. Small population. Old population. Not a lot of work. Nothing really works right up there.
