Charlottesville’s Robert E. Lee statue has met its end, in a 2,250-degree furnace.
The divisive Confederate monument, the focus of the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in 2017, was secretly melted down and will become a new piece of public art.

A historic, century-old Robert E. Lee statue by famed American artist Henry Shrady, which once stood in Charlottesville, Virginia, has now been destroyed forever, melted down so it can be turned into a new piece of “public art,” which is guaranteed to be a hideous abomination.

The statue’s defenders more recently sought to block the city from handing over Lee to the Charlottesville’s Black history museum, which had proposed a plan to repurpose the metal. In a lawsuit, those plaintiffs suggested the monument should remain intact or be turned into Civil War cannons.
But on Saturday the museum went ahead with its plan in secret at this small Southern foundry, in a town and state The Washington Post agreed not to name because of participants’ fears of violence

Before the Civil War Lee was known as one of America’s best generals, but since he wss “son” of Virginia he sided with his homeland during the war, and after the war became a strong advocate and promoter of better education for blacks.
The statue belonged in a museum where Lee’s total history could have been part of the display of his statue - not destroyed.

I agree. Lee is a hero for surrendering honorably, instead of fighting a gaurilla war, and also getting others to do.
