Tonight on Father Spitzer’s Universe, the priest who was once president of Gonzaga University, answered a viewer’s question: With all the unrest and out of control crime in so many cities, what should be the proper Christian response?”
He replied: “There are surveys and statistics listing the worst cities for crime rates. Find these and move to a city that is on the list for being safest.”
Didn’t say “forgive them” or try to understand them and talk to them.
Saint Theresa of Calcutta said: “People believe I mean I merely want them to send some money when they aske me what I want them to do to help the people in the poorest neighborhoods. I reply when they say what can I do, go down at 4 am to a really bad neighborhood in a large city and come up to a sleeping homeless person and say I want you to know someone cares about you.”
I believe no one ever took her up on that.
Father Spitzer is correct of course, for a myriad of reasons. The high violence cities have governments which create the violence through lax prosecution, mismanagement, and government corruption. What holds up these evil citadel are the good productive people who also are the victims. Removing the economic support and pool of victims would I’m plode these horrible places...think about it.
