Meta [Facebook] launches center in response to EU ultimatum over Hamas misinformation

Facebook parent company Meta responded to legal threats by the European Union over its attempts to regulate misinformation related to the Israel war by launching an operating center.

Meta released an updated content monitoring action plan on Friday detailing its approach for handling misinformation arising out of the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas. The plan arrived in response to a letter from EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, who threatened legal action against them over the Digital Services Act, a law that tightens the region's content moderation laws. The EU has already launched an inquiry into X, formerly known as Twitter, over its lax approach to content moderation compared to other platforms.

"Since the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on Saturday and Israel's response in Gaza, expert teams from across our company have been working around the clock to monitor our platforms while protecting people's ability to use our apps to shed light on important developments happening on the ground," Meta stated in a blog post.

The company reportedly took over 795,000 pieces of content and marked them with the "disturbing" label since the initial attack by Hamas. It also noted that Hamas is listed on Meta's Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy and thus banned from all Meta platforms. Content praising Hamas is prohibited from Meta, although "social and political discourse" is allowed.

It's unclear if Meta's response will please Breton. The commissioner received details from X on its content moderation on Thursday from X CEO Linda Yaccarino, but he still proceeded with an inquiry.

"X is committed to serving the public conversation, especially in critical moments like this, and understands the importance of addressing any illegal content that may be disseminated through the platform," Yaccarino wrote. "There is no place on X for terrorist organizations or violent extremist groups, and we continue to remove such accounts in real time, including proactive efforts."

Meta was one of several Big Tech companies that signed an agreement with the EU to regulate content. X abstained from signing, and owner Elon Musk has attempted to rally European politicians to push back on the Digital Services Act.

So the EU does not want the world to know how savage Hamas is in real life? France should pull out of the EU. They went after the Muslims recently for holding pro-Hamas protests in Paris.

So Facebook doesn’t like to be told what it can and can’t censor.

Does the EU regulate print newspapers similarly?

Or mailed newsletters?

Or do they just go after online stuff (web sites, insta, Facebook, x)

FACT from yesterday:

THE EU gave $10 million to Palestine for pipeline materials for water lines. Those were installed.

Then the EU gave them another $10 million of same. Also installed.

HAMAS DUG UP PIPELINES & USED THE CYLINDERS FOR CRUDE ROCKETS.

TELL ME AGAIN HOW NASTY ISRAEL IS-—USE SMALL WORDS, PLEASE-—I ONLY WENT TO A ONE ROOM SCHOOL.
