The Middle East is complicated. Saudi Arabia and Iran are competing for influence amongst the Muslims: economically, politically, and often militarily (as seen previously with the Yemeni Civil War).

Despite historical antipathy for the Jews, the feud between Saudi Arabia and Iran has two separate dimensions: not only Sunni Islam vs Shia Islam from a religious standpoint, but also the longstanding historical tension between the Arabs and the Persians.

My bet is that Iran is trying to bait Israel into acting with such overwhelming force that their fledgling political ties with other Arab nations (like Saudi Arabia and the UAE) will go down the drain.

My exact thoughts. They’re trying to torpedo further Abraham Accords negotiations, and were triggered by Biden’s Iran Diplomatic Group (Rob Malley’s team) being outed as full of Iranian spies. They know the US money is going to dry up and there will be hell to pay in Washington, so their only other option was to sponsor suicide and slaughter raids into Israel so that the Israelis would respond full force and lose general Arab support, since the Arab Street reflexively supports the Palestinians when there’s a huge flare up.

The UAE seems to be the only Arab government that hasn’t taken the bait.
