At 1st Midwest Beaver Summit, role of the hefty rodents praised in wetland restoration, climate change fight
The Chicago Tribune via Yahoo ^ | September 17, 2023 | by Nara Schoenberg, Chicago Tribune

As the nation faces a future of increasing flooding, drought and wildfires, millions of 60-pound rodents stand by, ready to assist.

Beavers can transform parched fields into verdant wetlands and widen rivers and streams in ways that not only slow surging floodwater, but store it for times of drought.

Still not impressed? In 2020, three raging wildfires in Colorado — including one with walls of flame 70 feet high — effectively bowed to the flat-tailed dam-builders, according to Emily Fairfax, an assistant professor of physical geography at the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities.

The fast-moving “megafires” left the water-saturated areas around beaver-occupied rivers largely unharmed, while beaver-free river banks suffered extensive damage.

“We desperately need to build more climate-resilient landscapes. We need to engineer something. We need to figure out a better solution,” Fairfax said. “And what I want to ask everyone to consider, is, what about nature’s engineers?”

And yes, she said, she was referring to the beaver.

BTW, when I visited Universal Studios about 1986 or 1989

The Leave it to Beaver house was about 3 houses down from The Munsters house

So the street shots had to be panned in one direction only

Mid west beaver summit.....

I wondered why there was a recent increase in You Tube videos about beavers. They’re having a summit

We had a surge locally in the bever population a decade or so back. It seems that the surge and the beavers are gone.

Interestingly, in the lakes where there were beavers, there are now otters.

“We desperately need to build more climate-resilient landscapes. We need to engineer something. . .

These are crazy people.

"Beavers can transform parched fields into verdant wetlands," the text explains.

I don't mind beavers, where I am--even though I've seen them destroy forests by flooding. They are inherently funny, which redeems a lot of what they do, as long as they are kept under control.

And they definitely are more sane than environmentalists.

So, Beaver dams are good but people made dams are bad. They removed dams on California’s rivers and some others in the heartland because they impede the flow of water. Beaver dams in my area cause excessive silting in the streams and rivers which leads the Department of Natural Resources to destroy the beaver dams. The author of this article needs an education.

Local state wildlife guy tried to get me to take a couple of beavers for my stream. I could see them taking out all my yard trees.

Nope

I can always count on articles about beavers and Uranus to bring out the 11-year old in all of us.

Oh, articles about the capital of Thailand.
