What’s interesting is that there was never a “right to vote” in the original U.S. Constitution, and any rights associated with citizens voting never came up until the 26th Amendment was ratified in 1971.

The founders of this country knew damn well that establishing widespread voting rights was a dangerous path to the nation’s destruction. And here we are.

Old enough to die in rice paddies but not old enough to vote because you are ignorant...I hate when people infringe the rights to which they themselves were entitled, once they are not in the class they want to infringe. Lots of stupid/clueless/uninterested 40 year olds too.

And you wave that like a flag. Consensus is not any measure of right of wrong or of legitimacy.

Right! Having the Constitution in pocket form & reading it through once or twice is not the definition of a Constitutional scholar.
Wait, this is the guy who started biotech firms w/o any training in biotech or pharmacy. Consistent. No experience in Government applies to the American people to be president, starts biotech firms w/o training, constitutional scholar, no relevant degree or course of study..is there a pattern emerging?

MC Cain was born to American parents. Did you forget that part?

How do we decide what is right or wrong or legitimate regarding natural born citizenship?

What do you suggest?

People are all over the place on this issue.

And the fact is, people who some Freepers say are not natural born citizens have been a president, a vice president, and a few others have been presidential candidates.

You are right that a Free Republic member consensus doesn’t settle any issue. But then what do we say, about the fact that some people who some Freepers claim are not natural born citizens have never been prevented from running and being elected?

Dilbert. I have already posted to you my take. The Founders specifically used a different term “natural born” for President & Vice President. They wrote articles, letters & monographs examining the implications of allowing Presidents to be selected from the children of foreign citizens such that these candidates had the potential to be of mixed loyalties. I have sent you a link to a review article that references those communications.
There is confusion on the part of many who do not read the 14th amendment properly. It was specifically directed at former slaves who had no allegiance to any other country. Not for any Tom Dick or Harriet whose foreign citizen mother delivered on American soil.
Obama’s supporters knew he was ineligible. They tried several times to get Congress to pass a law that would allow him to run. When they weren’t successful they just swept the issue under the carpet and used the media to attack any who tried to get the real facts about Obama’s parentage & place of birth documents.
Just like the Biden election fraud, there are people who say move on, water under the bridge.
Then there are people of moral character who love America & respect the Constitution. Those people say that if this criminal fraud is not fully investigated, and punished we no longer have a Country but are merely a banana republic.
As far as people running who are not eligible that is on the parties that allow those ineligible candidates to run on their ticket. Do you have any respect for either of those parties? Are they gatekeepers or criminal syndicates?

Beside Obama the only POTUS about whom there was a question was: President Chester A. Arthur. There was debate about whether he was born in Vt or during a visit to Canada. Certainly this controversy which was raised after Arthur rose to the presidency following Garfield’s incapacitation, does not invalidate the Constitution’s requirement.
