People living in Minnesota without legal immigration status can now begin the process of getting their driver's license by making an appointment for their written driver's test, state officials announced at a news conference Thursday.
Around 81,000 people are expected to be eligible under the state’s new law — dubbed "Driver’s License for All." They can now make appointments to apply but won’t be able to actually get a license until the law goes into effect Oct. 1.
"We’re incredibly proud to be a part of a handful of states that offer driver’s license for all," said Pong Xiong, Driver and Vehicle Services Director at the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, at the news conference. "And the first step to getting your driver’s license is to pass that written test."
The new law removes the requirements for applicants to show legal presence, said Jody-Kay Peterson, the department's Driver Services Program Director.
When asked about any risk for deportation applicants may face, Peterson said the department will not submit the names or personal information of applicants to any immigration law enforcement.
Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed the measure into law this year. It reverses a 2003 change by then-Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, barring people without legal status from getting licenses, citing security concerns after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Supporters of Minnesota's new law say it will improve public safety by ensuring that all drivers are licensed and insured, and have taken driver’s education courses. Backers included law enforcement, faith, business and immigrant rights groups.
Opponents say it will encourage illegal immigration.

I have witnessed myself, immigrants (legal) getting mail in ballots in Oregon. I can only imagine that all the illegals are getting ballots as well.
It’s but a small jump from issuing a driver’s license to registering someone to vote.
Which of course is the plan all along.

Kalifornia combined illegal trespassers getting a license with the Motor Voter law. Anyone at the DMV for license, registration, whatever, is automatically registered to vote. Gee.....I wonder which political party they pick? And just how many times do these illegal trespassers vote each election?
Of course, in Kalifornia, it has been so very true that the people who vote are not as important as the people who count the votes.
Be a shame if all the illegals who show up for their driver’s licenses got grabbed and deported. No, wait, that would actually be a good thing.
Why not? They need to get to that big mall.
They should be arrested on arrival and deported. Why in the world are we giving licenses to people who are here illegally?

Here in Calif & Nevada-—the prior illegals get to take a translator with them to the DMV & that person can ‘help ‘ with the written test.
INSURANCE goes with a vehicle-—NOT with a driver alone in most states.
In Calif, my UNINSURED MOTORIST coverage cost me an extra $1 a month in the 70’s/80’s.
When I left Calif—18 +++ years ago, UM cost was about 30% of my premium..
Here in Nevada, with 24 hour everything-—the UNINSURED MOTORIST coverage is 47.8% of my premium.
IF they do get insurance in order to register a vehicle-—they cancel the insurance within 60 days & keep moving so DMV cannot find them. There also is a lag with the cancelled insurance notification being given to the DMV.
IT IS COMPLETE BULL HOCKEY to try & say that they will be good drivers & be insured....
SINCE this is MINNESOTA——HOW many of these illegal invaders have ever driven in SNOW???
MOTOR VOTER LAWS REQUIRE DMV employees to give license applicants a voter registration card——or they can be fired.
