Dollar stores are one of the bright spots in America's ailing brick-and-mortar retail industry: These discount retailers will represent one-third of all new store openings in the U.S. this year. Their ubiquity, however, is prompting questions about their low-cost operations, impact on communities and worker safety.
The stores, which sell items for $1 each or slightly higher, provide communities with much-needed discount products, ranging from household staples like groceries to Halloween decorations. But workers and labor advocates are increasingly warning that the cheap items come at a price for their communities.
Some of these issues were raised after last month's racially motivated attack at a Jacksonville, Florida-based Dollar General store, when a White man killed a 19-year-old employee and two customers. All three victims were Black. The gunman took his own life. The incident occurred after the attacker had earlier driven to a Family Dollar store, according to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, who noted that the man had previously worked at a Dollar Tree.
The shooter may have targeted dollar stores because "it doesn't appear that he wanted to face anyone who would cause him issues," said Waters said in a press conference last month.

Dollar stores haven’t ever limited themselves to items priced at or near one dollar. Anymore than Woolworth’s was truly a “five and dime” store.
Writer is living in a fantasy but doesn’t know it.
The concept that you can put merchanize on open shelves, staff the store with one employee, and expect to be paid for said merchandize is inconsistent with the current structure of society in the neighborhoods where dollar stores are located.
They are 1.25 dollar stores or 3-5 dollar stores in some areas. The one dollar for most items dollar store is dead as a practical concept. inflation don’t you know.

One near me had a display of small rugs priced at $25 and up. The “dollar” appellation is just image and advertising.
“I know several assistant managers, including myself, that any given Sunday, you were alone,”-—”No one should be in the store alone.”
America has really changed when you can’t even operate your little store or business alone.
Rather than go after the store we should do whatever changes we need to make America safe again.

As KIA and Hyundai cars spread across the nation, car theives suffer uncontrollable urges to steal cars. Park one outside a Dollar General with an ATM, and you have a real unintentional crime spree on your hands.
I guess they’d prefer “food deserts” to “dollar stores.”
We know who’s doing the stealing.

Dollar General & others supply a need for rural areas...a quick trip to buy milk/bread/beer/cigs.
Where I live-—the nearest grocery store is 25 miles or 24 miles or 35 miles.

Quiet living-—we make out lists & buy accordingly....once a month

AND-—the clerks KNOW us & we don’t hassle them.
we have one near us and the fire marshal has consistently shut then down on multiple occasions for aisles being blocked with stocking carts and obstructions.
I don’t see how working at a dollar tree is any more dangerous than working at a trendy boutique. This is just some leftist prattling on against stores where “those people” shop.
