White House officials said Saturday they were caught flat-footed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' decision not to meet with President Biden when Biden visits the state later today.
Biden had said earlier he would meet with the governor as he tours areas of Florida damaged by Hurricane Idalia, but the DeSantis team contradicted the president.
"In these rural communities, and so soon after impact, the security preparations alone that would go into setting up such a meeting would shut down ongoing recovery efforts," said DeSantis spokesman Jeremy Redfern.

"The president spoke with the governor. It was an understanding that the president said to him he was coming to Florida. We never heard any disagreement with it."

In other time periods in our history nobody would’ve cared if two politicians from opposite parties met.
However, in today’s politics you’ll get crucified by partisans from all sides as an appeaser, sellout, and traitor for the smiling photo op with the “enemy.”
It doesn’t bother me because I have low expectations for the DC Uni party, which is made up of Republicans, democrats, and a few independents.
Yeah, like Chris Christie hugging Obama. Biden delayed going to Hawaii because he said he didn’t want to interfere with the recovery. DeSantis is just using Biden’s excuse.
The WH has been slamming FL for over two years. I don’t blame DeSantis for not being used as a prop, especially to a corrupt, illegitimate President who is running for re-election. And to make matters worse, Biden is in mental decline. He is just a figurehead. The country is being run by Jeff Zients.
Biden needs to be impeached, not respected. He is using the FL trip as a platform for the Green New Deal. He has blamed climate change for the hurricane. And when he made his first comments about the hurricane at a press conference, he spent 75% of the time talking about Maui.
