Abedin was reported to be “all but finalized.”

Weiner was the U.S. representative for New York’s 9th congressional district from 1999 until his resignation in 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, he consistently carried the district with at least 60% of the vote.

Weiner was the hand-picked successor and mentee of Chuck Schumer, who previously held the seat until he ousted Alfonse D'Amato for the New York Senate seat. Schumer called D'Amato a racist when D'Amato called Schumer a "putzhead" during a radio interview.
