"I just checked the web-page for the Dick's near me, however, and was surprised to see that it still stocks rifles and ammunition." I saw that page as well. Right under that was a page saying they were no longer selling guns or ammo.. (??) I'm confused..

This is what happens when corporations decide to insert themselves into the culture wars. For its part, Dick's was at the forefront of banning gun sales following the Parkland shooting, as if doing so would have any impact at all on mass shootings. I was a big Dick's user and at that time I had almost $1,000 of Dicks Gift Cards.
When they went crazy, me and thousands of other customers vowed to stay out of Dicks {as soon as I used up my cards}.
Dick's had some ammo discounted at 50-75% and that is all I spent my gift card money for.
Today, I don't even buy a golf ball, shirt or bag of golf tees at Dicks.

We ditched Dick’s 15 years ago when they bait and switched us on some shotgun shells at the counter. I did the thing I do best which is create a stink until they finally had to honor it. It still frosts my grits just thinking about it. 😆
