Council meeting in affluent San Francisco neighborhood descends into chaos as residents protest turning hotel into homes for 100 homeless people

A local council meeting in an affluent San Francisco neighborhood descended into chaos when hundreds of 'rowdy' residents began booing plans to place homeless people in a nearby hotel.

Crowds of angry Millbrae residents packed out their local community hall on Friday to protest 'Project Homekey' proposals to house 100 rough sleepers at the La Quinta hotel on El Camino Real, close to the city center.

So many people turned up that hundreds had to stand outside the 300-man capacity hall to hear proposals outlined by San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy.

But Callagy's speech was quickly 'drowned out' by boos from the audience, according to Jordan Grimes, the leader of a grassroots campaign group for affordable housing who was present at the meeting.

Videos show the crowd loudly remonstrating in scenes akin to a sports stadium crowd. Some residents yelled their opposition, while others waved signs, flung their arms in the air and made thumbs-down gestures toward the speakers.

'The crowd is rowdy and angry, booing the County Exec until he's drowned out completely. Multiple times,' Grimes live-tweeted from the overflow area outside the hall.

He said the situation escalated when county staff hosted a Q&A session - which was quickly overrun by 'people having their own conversations' and 'yelling'.

Brandishing home-made signs reading 'Don't Bully Millbrae', 'Protect Us' and 'Safety for Millbrae', the neighbors aired their concerns about public safety and the proximity of the hotel to several schools.

Like many cities in San Mateo County, Millbrae has a high median household income of $141,399 - while also being home to a hefty rough sleeping population.

Millbrae resident Patricia Lam came early to secure a seat - equipped with a large sign reading 'keep our children and seniors safe'.

Like what the people want, or don’t want, has ever meant ANYTHING to these people.

It’ll happen as planned.

I think it says “transparency”....the sign is small so they had to cut it in half.

The anguish of these clowns who voted for Sanctuary Cities now brings joy to my heart.

Is there a GoFundMe that allows me to buy a tent for a homeless person to live on the front lawn of a moron in Millbrae?

Uhhhh, Milbrae is not a San Francisco “neighborhood”. It is a separate city. I’ve been there, taken walks around San Andreas Lake in the hills.

San Mateo County voted 78% for Biden in 2020. 75% for Newsom in 2022.

Not a “San Francisco neighborhood.” San Francisco went rapidly down hill once the hippies moved in, and Marin to the north and Alameda across the bay to the east has also been loopy for a long, but this county, San Mateo, as well as Santa Clara, Contra Costa, Solano, and Sonoma were at least modestly conservative until the 80s and have now turned deep blue. This is what you get, you stupid bastards, when you vote for libs. And they’ll continue to vote the same way
