California has been hit by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake as Hurricane Hilary hits LA and San Diego with 80mph winds.

The quake centered in Ventura County was felt across parts of Southern California on Sunday afternoon.

The center is reported to have been four miles southeast of Ojai, about 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Shaking was reported in Malibu, Porter Ranch, parts of Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach and other locations.

A tornado warning has also been issued for San Diego and the surrounding Alpine and Descanso areas.

The National Weather Service released the warning at t 3:39 p.m. on Sunday local time, and will last until 4pm.

The United States Geological Survey, which reports and records earthquakes, said there were at least four aftershocks of magnitude-3.0 or greater.

It comes as Hurricane Hilary makes landfall in Southern California moving up from Mexico at speeds of 25mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Residents are contending with winds of 65mph and the expectation of torrential rain, that may bring up to ten inches in a matter of hours in some places.

At least one person has already died after their vehicle was swept away near Santa Rosalía, after catastrophic flooding swallowed parts of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.

It’s interesting the path seems to bypass LA county. Goes up through Palm Springs and Barstow, in to Nevada desert.

“Changing pressures and added water”

Exactly what I was thinking, do you suppose there is enough change to get some real plate slipping?
Makes me think of that old joke about the state slipping in to the ocean..... doesn’t seem as much like a joke tonight.

You guys out on the west coast better batten down the hatches and hang on.

In San Diego it has been pretty uneventful until now. The center of the “storm” just crossed the border and I just saw my trees finally start blowing around fairly good. Plenty of rain, but not the storm yet that was pushed in the local media. : )

I’m saying, as is everyone here in SoCal on FR, it’s not been a big deal at all and doesn’t look to be.

The media hypes things.

I guess a few days ago it was possible it could have remained a hurricane and hit Southern California, so nothing wrong with concern.

Luckily it’s dissipated, which I guess is normal for the pacific coast.

It’s nice you’re concerned.

"With “Hillary” there are no coincidences."

The demoncrats really missed a chance by naming the storm "Hillary".. They could have named it TRUMP.! And then whined like the dogs they are about Trump destroying California... :)

I’m watching the New Orleans Saints -Chargers game. The local Saints announcers were freaking out about the quake. They’re ready to get on the plane and head back to NOLA as soon as the game is over.

It’s in California. Past San Diego. A little southwest of Palm Springs, near Anza.

It’s down to 50 mph.

It’s totally dissipated.

I’d call it a strong drizzle. And this should be the worst of it.

"Is it shaking the crap out of California?"

If only a massive downpour simultaneously occurred.

los angeles could use a complete cycle through a gigantic washing machine.

You all okay in California? Did you feel the quake?

When the quake happened, I was driving home from gym...Gym decided to close at 2 pm today...I had to go to the gym earlier than planned...I did not feel anything shaking...I did get the earthquake alert on my phone...

There is a NFL preseason game going on at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood...The stadium is covered on the top...Not on the side...

At least in Los Angeles the winds have been dead calm, and
the rain has been sporadic generally moderate to light.

On Guam that is kite flying weather.

I’m sure the winds are stronger to the east but I imagine this tropical storm would be similar to one that passes you by at a distance. ATM It’s 75 degrees and 82% humidity. Not too far off a normal day here.

My grandson is at UC Santa Barbara. My son lives in San Clemente and said it’s been a big nothing, just light rain and no wind.
