the Romans did install slit trenches to run the poo water into the ocean..running their drinking water thru lead pipes. When they went nutz from the lead they didn’t care about the air freshness?..they quit calling themselves Romans and settled on Italians..

I've read about the lead pipe theory.

I lived in Impearial Beach in the early 90’s and there were many times when the smell of raw sewage was overwhelming.

There are still lead pipes in use in the United States today. There weren’t any standards for lead in water until 30 years ago.
