California man paralyzed from run-in with police gets $20 million settlement

A Northern California man who was left paralyzed after he was slammed to the ground during a traffic stop won a $20 million settlement, one of the largest in the state’s history, officials announced Tuesday.

Gregory Gross, an Army veteran who lives in Yuba City, sued the police department in 2022 after police officers used “pain compliance” techniques and expressed disbelief when he repeatedly cried out, “I can’t feel my legs.” Police officers also dismissed Gross when he said, “I can’t breathe,” while being held facedown on the lawn outside a hospital, video released by Gross’s lawyers shows.

Gross was accused of driving drunk and causing a slow-speed collision in April 2020.

Gross was left with a broken neck, and he underwent two surgeries to fuse his spine. He said the officers’ use of force left him unable to walk or care for himself, and he now needs round-the-clock nursing care for the rest of his life.

“We are not against the police,” said Attorney Moseley Collins, who represents Gross. “We are for the police, but we are against police brutality when it occurs.”

“If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime. “

They should have killed him. That will teach him.

Just what I thought. The cops were reasonable and the dude wouldn't stop acting out. If the DUI/"hit and run" dude had worked with the program, he would have been OK. But the dudester didn't want to work with the program.

Certainly the police and hospital system has serious issues.

He was handcuffed behind his back.

The polices were just getting their rocks off on the helpless guy.

So brave when their opponent is unable to defend himself.

That’s stupid. Is that like:” If you’ve got nothing to hide why won’t you let me search your car?” or
“Why are YOU making this difficult?”

But he was “acting out” and “didn’t work with the program” (may have been impaired) so that officer broke his neck.

If he is drunk, is "full compliance" realistic?

Also, this went way too far, not at the arrest site, but later when the new officer escalated it to the point of breaking his neck by impaling his head - and bloodying his face - on the ground.

Was he being saucy and cursing? Sure, but so what? He was drunk. Mel Gibson said some shit too during his DUI arrest. No one broke his neck. Laura Bush (Welch) KILLED a guy while drunk, and somehow escaped being paralyzed (and any charges as well).

I am with you. Body slamming someone in handcuffs, I assume with the officer’s weight landing on him?

Prosecute the bastards. His defiance was angering the police but not an immediate threat to them or anyone else.

He was completely limp after the slam, and they ignored it.

Very poor performance by the nurses as well, no immediate C-spine stabilization, haul him and roll him with his head flopping about.

“The Police and Police Brutality go together. You can’t have one without the other. For most Cops that is how they get their rocks off. Hurting people who can’t hurt back. Case in point: The old lady in Colorado with dementia. They were caught on video tape yukking it up while she sat suffering. And they were congratulating themselves on how brave and bad they were./p>

But the dudester didn't want to work with the program.

Or you'll get your neck broken. Even when the victim repeatedly told them he could no longer feel his legs, the cops said his legs were fine, implying the older guy was lying.
