A series of climate records on temperature, ocean heat, and Antarctic sea ice have alarmed some scientists who say their speed and timing is unprecedented.
Dangerous heatwaves in Europe could break further records, the UN says.
It is hard to immediately link these events to climate change because weather - and oceans - are so complex.
Studies are under way, but scientists already fear some worst-case scenarios are unfolding.
"I'm not aware of a similar period when all parts of the climate system were in record-breaking or abnormal territory," Thomas Smith, an environmental geographer at London School of Economics, says.
"The Earth is in uncharted territory" now due to global warming from burning fossil fuels, as well as heat from the first El Niño - a warming natural weather system - since 2018, says Imperial College London climate science lecturer Dr Paulo Ceppi.
We can certainly expect more and more of these records to break as the year goes on and we enter 2024, scientists say.
But it would be wrong to call what is happening a "climate collapse" or "runaway warming", cautions Dr Otto.
We are in a new era, but "we still have time to secure a liveable future for many", she explains.

A 10 billion year old planet, records dating back hundreds of years . . . reliable records dating back scores of years - these spikes are simply noise.
Have been visiting relatives in Indiana and south of Chicago and the evenings and mornings have required a jacket, more like fall than end of July so I guess that proves globull cooling by their standards.

Multiple billions have been spent cleaning ip pollution in the air and water from the industrial comples. Smoke stacks had to be fitted with just the right filters.
Ive seen asty, dead rivers become clean and abundant with life through those efforts. Across America over the last 60+ years, I’ve watched the air clear over and between cities going from white haze or brown smog to blue skys.
During the two weeks after 911 when planes were grounxded, the air cleared more and some cities began to have that fresh air smell again.
This year,the sun is very busy as part of its returning solar cycle.
Climate change is being blamed on the people, but it’s not the average person. Its things like air planes and rockets doing the damage.
How often do we learn of rockets launching on battery power, or planes flying on battery power instead of jet fuel?
How many air plane companies are being limited in their flights?
Yet, when those things are limited, the atmosphere cleans itself up in a matter of days, even while people drive their cars to work and continuing use of their air conditioners and gas stoves and outdoor grills.
But its the people, US, being limited and forced to buy inadequate barbie cars.
Watch what they do, not what they say.
Rockets, industry, planes, none of which are being targeted, are the biggest problem. And China..their pollution continues go go through the roof, but they aren’t being targeted.
And there’s not a damn thing we can do about about solar cycles.

As for uncharted territory, true. But then we always were.
The modern thermometer was invented inn 1719. The first study of ocean temperature was done in the late 1770s by Benjamin Franklin on a trip he made to France to ask the French king for funding for the war of independence.
So, fortunately for the Warmist we have little real data to refute their alarmist claims.
The alarmist use to their advantage that the tracking of temperatures begins during the Little Ice Age and just before the Industrial Revolution.
But real global temperatures tracking does not really begin until the advent of weather Satellites in the 1980’s
So, the idiot author is correct we are in uncharted territory and always have been.
This is typical weather during El Nino’ for this area. El Nino’ means heat and drought for most while it brings cool, rainy Michigan weather down into the Missouri Valley. Crops and gardens are going to produce in epic quantities. Rain has been heavy and spotty, but most all areas have ample moisture.
Hayfields are all dotted thick with big round bails. At least a 1/3 more bails than normal.
Nature is in refreshing, moist and cool bounty in this part of flyover.
