The 23-year-old, who is the first US soldier in decades to defect to North Korea, bolted across the border on Tuesday during a civilian tour of the tightly controlled Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas.

Why was he allowed to go on tours when he was being sent back to the U.S. for official military consequences, he should have had a MP escort the entire trip.

He was not allowed on tours. The tour came after his escape. He escaped from the South Korean air terminal where his escort was not legally allowed.
