My bad.

National Guard folks usually do a 6 by 2, IIRC.

Isn’t it 2 years IRR and then the last 2yrs some other military term, but still officially under the authority of DOD if something goes sideways?

I’m sure there’s probably different rules and regulations.
Everyone I knew was USAF or USMC, all enlisted personnel.
To be honest, nobody really paid attention to IRR because “they’d never activate me”…

Normally, all initial enlistment contracts are for eight years. During that period you can have a mix of active, reserve, and IRR until the eight years have been completed at which time (if you haven’t reenlisted) you are mustered out of the military and your service records are transferred to national archives from whatever service component you were in.
