“Soft bigotry of low expectations”.

I have always believed after I heard that quote as a young man that a superior phrase would have been “The subtle bigotry of low expectations.

The word “subtle” is a far more accurate and descriptive term for the explication one is attempting to convey.

a superior phrase would have been “The subtle bigotry of low expectations.”

But Dubya, who introduced that phrase, had a syllable limit. “Subtle” would have been one syllable over the line.
