New Coke was the most brilliant marketing play, ever.

How to save... what, $00.0031416 per can of Coke at... however many Bazillions of cans of Coke... let's see...

First, mess the original product up beyond recognition. In the case of Coca Cola, reformulate it to make it taste kinda like Pepsi but not really. Call it New Coke.

Attempt to market it in a way that makes it look like you're serious about it, or something.

Wait for the bottom to fall out of the product as people switch to various competitors like Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer... RC Cola, etc.

Issue a mea culpa and bring back the old product (in the case of Coca Cola, call it Classic Coke), EXCEPT: Now it's no longer made with real cane sugar. Not to advocate for consumption of plain ol' sugar, but there are even worse things, like High Fructose Corn Syrup, which saves the Coca Cola company... (checking spreadsheet), yes, $00.0031416 per unit - at multitudes of Bazillions of units in the US. In other countries where sugar is cheap and corn syrup would have to be imported from the US, I.E. Mexico, Coke is still made with cane sugar. The best of both worlds, from Coke's POV.

(Health awareness note: All this shit is bad for you, but lots of millionaires in Atlanta don't GA*.
