Every time a story like this surfaces, the police lose a little support from the middle class. And that is no small thing. We need the police. And the police need us.

I get that police work is difficult, and often dangerous. But my goodness. Are they taught nothing about de-escalation? Must everything be a SWAT raid into a terrorist meth lab?

Shoot the dog. Shoot the kid. Shoot the guy holding a cell phone.

No, the police need us. They have no duty to protect anyone. They need the public's blind support for everything they do.

I always remember the advice of the police chief of Kenosha during that fiasco a couple of years ago: If you don’t want the police shooting someone who is invading your home or abducting your child, then don’t call the police when you have a problem with someone invading your home or abducting your child.

The real cause is the 95% of good cops covering for the 5% of the bad ones.
