When Laura Stowell was first looking for a home in Seattle, real estate agents would often refer to areas that had “better schools,” she said. But the Boston transplant chafed at the idea of shopping for the best classroom. At one point she was the only white parent on her block who sent their kid to West Seattle Elementary, she said. A growing number of parents, mostly white, are taking the same stance as Stowell, said Katy Strange, who heads the local chapter of Integrated Schools, a national organization that encourages affluent parents to enroll their kids in racially diverse schools close to home. The parents discuss the latest research on integration, and how they can contribute to their schools without disrupting the culture that already exists there.

My DIL, born 1971, attended public school in Seattle until sixth grade but then the busing started and the lib parents put her in private school. Likely this happened with a lot of white parents who could afford it.
Seattle does not have a huge minority population but there are some very bad areas in Seattle. South of Seattle there are areas where all the signage is in another language and no one seems to speak English.

Dallas bused kids back and forth across the city in ‘72. What a horrible decision. Our school had to lock kids in their classrooms and pull down metal gates blocking halls during class. Uh, yeah, so much for fire codes. We weren’t allowed in the hallways during class but one time I was called to go somewhere and was immediately accosted in the stairwell and another time a guy tried to pull crap on me in the middle of class. Not surprising, my family was part of the white flight outta that hell hole. I lived 4 houses from school but wasn’t going to be allowed to go there until 12th grade.
Around 10 years ago, I drove past my old school and neighborhood but there wasn’t a single white, Hispanic or Asian student. Yeah, so much for diversity. It had been a great school but today’s test scores are way below average.
Let’s visit Laura Stowell’s daughter in a few years and see how she’s made out being a lily White girl in majority black middle and high schools.
Just wait until Laura decides her XX child should be a boy.
