I was born and raised in SF. It wasn't bad at all. I've visited NYC, and it's a hundred times busier and more crowded than what I remember about old days in SF. But now, SF is as bad as NYC (I moved to suburbs over 50 years ago). Most empty lots and parking lots built over with towers, horrendous traffic, and lousy thieves and homeless now. As you say, demoralizing experience. I have relatives in SF and PhillyPA and don't understand why they continue to live in big cities.
