Texas lawmakers recommend impeaching Attorney General Ken Paxton after Republican investigation

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton teetered on the brink of impeachment Thursday after years of scandal, criminal charges and corruption accusations that the state’s Republican majority had largely met with silence until now.

In an unanimous decision, a Republican-led House investigative committee that spent months quietly looking into Paxton recommended impeaching the state’s top lawyer. The House could vote on the recommendation as soon as Friday. If it impeaches Paxton, he would be forced to leave office immediately.

The move sets set up what could be a remarkably sudden downfall for one of the GOP’s most prominent legal combatants, who in 2020 asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. Only two officials in Texas’ nearly 200-year history have been impeached.

Paxton has been under FBI investigation for years over accusations that he used his office to help a donor and was separately indicted on securities fraud charges in 2015, but has yet to stand trial.

When the five-member committee’s investigation came to light Tuesday, Paxton suggested it was a political attack by the House’s “liberal” Republican speaker, Dade Phelan. He called for Phelan’s resignation and accused him of being drunk during a marathon session last Friday. Phelan’s office has brushed off the accusation as Paxton attempting to “save face.”

One of Paxton’s criminal defense attorneys, Philip Hilder, said Thursday that his client’s alleged wrongdoing should be left to the courts.

“These matters are appropriate for resolution in a judicial system, not in a political system,” Hilder told The Associated Press.

All it means is that he can’t run fir the senate or for gov. Do we dig in for hum the way we’re willing to dig in for Trump? The motives of our enemies are the same. Texas is red. We should have a good bench there. Do we allow our enemies to take him out and thereby show weakness.

Me thinks we should get down and dirty. Otherwise we get another P.Bush at the top.

On the BRIGHT SIDE, it makes voting easy for us Republican Texans - we simply vote, at least in the Primaries, for ANYONE who doesn’t have this Shiite on their hands, which seems to mean ANY Republican who is in office on this day.

I challenge anybody to watch this video of Phelan from a House session from 2 days ago and say he’s not completely plastered.

I logged onto my Appraisal District Website tonight to protest my Property taxes... which have gone up !00% since 2018.

They have Doubled since 2018 to over $20K per year. I pay $10K more today than I did in 2018.

My house is 22 years old and I have made no real improvements since I built it.

Impeaching Ken Paxton is an attempt to hide how completely F-UP Austin is. F all of them.

It is time for all Texans, and all Americans to stand behind Ken Paxton, and fight for the attorney general who has proven himself to be the embodiment of integrity, and Texas conservatism. Ken Paxton has been there for conservatism and President Trump. Ken Paxton fights day and night for Texas conservatives and is under attack from Democrats from across the country.

Which tells me there's nothing there.

The same corruption as in the days of LBJ in Texas just the name of the political party has changed.

This is a tough one for conservatives. Paxton is hard line conservative on all major issues, but he is personally corrupt. Had an affair in his office 2-3 years ago, in addition to the shady financial shenanigans. How long can conservatives turn a blind eye to his sordid behavior?

You don’t get cowardly Republicans afraid of Master Democrat and what the press will say in a vacuum.
