Florida Lawmaker Introduces Amendment to Allow DeSantis to Run for President without Resigning

Ron DeSantis could run for president without resigning his post as governor of Florida, according to an election bill amendment filed Tuesday by a Republican state senator.

The amendment to the elections bill, SB7050, would clarify qualification requirements for political offices and exempt “Persons seeking the office of President of Vice President of the United States” from state rules that require political office holders to resign their current position in order to qualify as a candidate for another office.

The strike-all amendment was filed Tuesday afternoon by state Senator Travis Hutson, a Republican from northeast Florida, whom DeSantis endorsed last year.

Florida law currently states that “No officer may qualify as a candidate for another state, district, county, or municipal public office if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other without resigning from the office he or she presently holds.”

The office holder’s “resignation is irrevocable,” the law states, and it “must be submitted at least 10 days prior to the first day of qualifying for the office he or she intends to seek.”

The Florida House is expected to file its own version of the amendment later this week.

I understand why politicians do this but I never liked it (no matter which party).

Not a good move. Changing law, rules, or policy to get special privileges leaves a bad impression of undue favoritism.

The existing law is probably unconstitutional as applied to POTUS, VPOTUS, U.S. Congress (Senate or House) anyway. Due to Federal law being supreme and bucking no interference pursuant to Supreme Court precedent (and logic).

But, but, but... desantis supporters here said he's not running!

Even desantis says he's not a candidate

desantis:'I'm not a candidate, so we'll see if and when that changes'

So, the question is, when you have someone that doesn't tell the most obvious truth, like desantis has been doing.

How are you going to tell when desantis is telling the truth, or lying to you?

Florida law currently states that “No officer may qualify as a candidate for another state, district, county, or municipal public office if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other without resigning from the office he or she presently holds.”

Doesn’t say anything about a candidate for a Federal office.

Agreed. You’re either confident, or not.

Beyond the law its the basic principal.

Being the governor of the 3rd largest state isn’t a part time job. If he is going to spend the next 18 months running for president he should resign.

If you are a Florida resident call your representative to or senator and tell them you object to this. Make Ron DeSantis be our governor like he was elected to be. Thank you
