The state is considering a right-to-counsel bill that would set up a state “Office of Civil Representation” to provide attorneys to tenants in eviction cases.
The office could also contract organizations to represent people in court.
The bill requires the provision of information on tenants’ rights, and non-compliance with the law could result in vacating eviction warrants.
Legislators have pushed for policies like “Good Cause Eviction” to limit filings that inundate courts and shelter systems by forcing people from their homes.
The cost of implementing the right-to-counsel bill is estimated at $500 million, with proponents stating that it would save public dollars with fewer people homeless or in shelters.
More tax and spend with more anti-private property rights to boot. A win/win for Demonrats!
Is it just me or has that “news” website gone full democratic socialist?
All of the upstate rags are following in the footsteps of the Demogogue and Comical (Democrat and Chronicle)
That probably part of it. It’s pretty obvious their “Staff reports” are mostly someone cutting and pasting from other sites.
Looks like a site with local stories
By the time the tenant is in court it is too late.
More laws written by lawyers to benefit the legal industry. Who could have seen it coming?!?!
Perhaps the money would be better spent on an education program for tradespeople to lower the cost of rental property repairs.
Perhaps NY should ask the Biden administration for Medicaid waivers so property taxes and rents can be lower.
Perhaps costly building regulations can be voided.
Any mom and pop landlord that doesn’t sell right away will lose in the end. End rental properties once and for all for the little guys and when nothing else is available that’s NOT owned and operated by “Big Rental” those who think this is musical chairs will find out what it’s like when there is no chair. Big Rental is just waiting.
Oh Good
Another way to take money out of the pockets of the middle class and put in the hands of the wealthy lawyers that donate to Democrat politicians.
Exactly. As a landlord with vacancies on one of our recent acquisitions (newly rehabbed by us) I can say along with other landlords across the country, that the tenant pool is abysmal.
The Covid Eviction Moratoriums (TM) caused a heightened sense of tenant entitlement. Out of 150 inquiries, maybe 2 were eligible. For one of my vacancies I ended up selecting a marginal tenant just because the pool was so terrible.
She is already starting to pay rent late after just six months of being in the unit and has had constant complaints of “noise” (unfounded according to the owner occupant next door) high utility bills (DUH we are ALL getting high utility bills thanks to Resident Kid Diddler) etc. etc.
Almost all the applicants have “emotional support animals” and no visible means of income/support as if waiting for Universal Basic Income and Cancel Rent (TM) to kick in.
We are a hair’s breadth away from 1031ing into a reasonable state like Alabama. However I anticipate all these blue state militantly pro tenant regulations to go country wide once Biden gets re-elected via voter fraud in 2024.
Incrementally bankrupting landlords until the government controls all housing. The living conditions will deteriorate but that’s okay, because social media won’t report it, so most of us will never know. The Reset utopia gets closer and closer.
California aka Hell on Earth
New York aka Hell on Earth II
IF I EVER were to consider owning ANY rentals-—it would be storage rentals.
Don’t pay? Your stuff gets auctioned-—maybe even on TV
