GOP donors open to other Trump challengers as DeSantis tries to find footing

interviews with nearly two dozen GOP donors, strategists and voters suggest the desire for a backup option has intensified amid questions about how the Florida governor would fare

With an eye on DeSantis’s vulnerabilities, many donors have kept the door open to other potential White House contenders. One lesson that sticks with many benefactors who helped Jeb Bush raise more than $100 million by July of 2015 only to see the former Florida governor falter is that Trump’s ability to torpedo his rivals — as he is now trying to do with DeSantis — necessitates a backup plan.

“My gut feeling is don’t count out some of the others,” said Mike Murphy, a GOP strategist who helmed a super PAC that supported Bush.

Some donors looking to move on from Trump have expressed disappointment that Youngkin has not made moves toward running. Donors are also curious about Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who won reelection last year despite Trump’s opposition in the primary, and Sununu, who will travel to Southern California later this week to meet with potential backers as he explores whether there is a path for him to win.

Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only Black Republican senator, is inviting potential donors to take his measure at a mid-April summit in Charleston and could announce a bid within a month...“What I’m hearing in the donor class is that we absolutely want to win this time...Allies to Scott voiced optimism about his chances, saying...broader appeal

DeSantis has experienced a backslide in early polls since his decisive reelection victory in November, but the governor’s allies dismiss the notion that there is any consternation about his potential candidacy.

Don and Teri Synborski said they both like DeSantis, but would like to see Christie enter the race.

They’ll just watch their cash evaporate for a “lost cause.”

The lost cause is trying to defeat Trump in the Primary.

If every GOP candidate shares Trump’s policies, why would you run against Trump with the exception of your donors funding your retirement? His popularity is more than every candidate combined and if you support Trump in 2024, chances are you will get his endorsement for 2028.

Plus, Trump can get more done because he is from outside the establishment. He now knows better on who to bring into the administration and how government works. He didn’t have that in 2016.

“Don and Teri Synborski said they both like DeSantis, but would like to see Christie enter the race.”

That pretty much says it all about these donors.

Murphy might give candidates money but he is like political poison to voters. He can give millions of dollars to any rino and it will not buy them any votes. Nobody wants another loser like Pierre Delecto or Tubby Chris Christie. We need someone with who will fight for the country, not for the last piece of cake at the buffet.

What DeSantis supporter have to assess is whether it’s more important to them that Trump NOT get back into the White House, than to get a Republican in there.

The problem is that Trump’s “Stormy Daniels Problem” is now DeSantis’s “Stormy Daniels Problem” in that he brought her name up, to un-needed, while criticizing what looked to be the impending arrest of Trump last week.

Bringing up her name, IN THAT CONTEXT, means that a good chunk of Trump supporters are done with him...so, while he might still win the Primary, he won’t be getting into the White House without those millions of Trump voters.

Anyway, say what you will about that part of Trump’s support, but it DOES EXIST, even if the Washington Post won’t mention it and people here would rather not have to consider it.

One of the biggest assets Trump brings to a presidential election is his sizable support among registered DEMOCRATS in some key states. An establishment GOP doesn’t have a chance in hell of even running competitively in most Rust Belt states.

DEFINITELY agree on that. And I think that’s really what the Democrats fear about Trump, as they know no Republican can win without the Rust Belt...and only Trump can win the Rust Belt.

Age is just a number with Trump. And I don’t want my President to me younger than me right now.

The Never Trump scumbags are panicking - ha ha ha ha.
They are fooling themselves and have already hit the bottom of the barrel.
The ash holes that have declared or are leaning won’t break 20% combined. But let the turds in the Never Trump camp spend their money on nitwits because where ever they have left will go to the Democrat/communist candidate.

“assholes” - “scumbags” - “turds” .... Yikes!!! What do you think of the “Can’t we do better than Trump?” peeps who will vote for the R candidate in Nov? I’m voting for the most “electable” imo R in the primary, which eliminates DT. If DT wins the nomination, I’ll vote DT though I doubt he has a chance of winning nationally after his latest diatribes.
